It gets a little personal.....
Most families are a mixture of the wonderful and the troublesome. Most of us grew up drawing strength and security from our backgrounds, and equally, carrying damage and unhelpful ways of thinking.
As the poet Philip Larkin wrote:
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
or, as Tolstoy wrote:
each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
Though it's a sometimes tough topic for both of us, today Angela and John talk about relationships with their parents - about gratitude, what baggage to put down (and how to do it), and adulting..... about being a fully fledged human.
