In September 2015 a 95-year-old woman died of pneumonia in Kanagawa Prefecture, and her family told no one for over two months. Decades earlier she had been the most famous face in Japan. This episode uncovers the real woman behind Setsuko Hara, born Masae Aida in 1920 in what is now Yokohama, who dropped out of school at 15 to support a family of eight siblings when her brother-in-law, a film director, steered her into Nikkatsu Studios. By 17 she was starring in a German-Japanese co-production, and through the war she became the tragic, self-sacrificing face of state-sponsored cinema.
