In July 1942, the merchant sailors of Convoy PQ-17 watched their entire naval escort turn and speed away, followed by a single radioed word: scatter. This episode reconstructs the Anglo-American operation to deliver Lend-Lease tanks, aircraft, and supplies to the Soviet Union through the Arctic, where perpetual summer daylight, freezing spray, and thermal layers that blinded sonar made cargo ships sitting ducks. We examine why summer sailing was still safer than winter routes forced close to German-occupied Norway.
