Hollywood gave us the image of a flawless, well-funded global syndicate of escaped Nazis operating from jungle compounds, all under the ominous code name Odessa. This episode separates that myth from the documented history. The term first appeared in a U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps memo dated July 3, 1946, and traced back to a watchword former SS prisoners used at the Bensheim-Auerbach internment camp to jump the line for Red Cross care packages. Historians including Guy Walters, Daniel Stahl and Judith Cerny found no evidence the organization extended beyond that camp, yet Frederick Forsyth's 1972 thriller The Odessa File and Ira Levin's The Boys from Brazil turned it into accepted fact.
