When you say an affirmation, it activates the part of your brain known as the reticular activating system (RAS). The RAS is responsible for filtering information and deciding what’s important enough to bring to your attention.
For example, if you’re looking for a new car, you’ll start to notice all the cars on the road that match your criteria. That’s because your RAS is working to bring relevant information to your attention.
The same thing happens when you use affirmations. When you tell yourself “I am healthy and happy,” your RAS will start to look for evidence of that in your life. It will filter out the negative information and help you to focus on the positive.
