If you would like to think further on this passage and sermon, here are a few questions that might help: 1. Nebuchadnezzar insisted people bow down and worship his golden statue. Dan suggests we have bowed down before the god of materialism in our day. What do you think about that - do you agree? 2. People were forced to worship the golden statue. God doesn’t force us to worship him but looks for us to worship him freely, in Spirit and in truth. How can we choose to do that in everyday life? 3. Maybe you or someone you know is facing a difficult time or feeling under pressure right now. Can you take heart from the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego - that God is with you even in the midst of it all? 4. Do you have a regular pattern of praying, of coming before God? Something that will help sustain you through moments of pressure? 5. God acts powerfully to save Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego - it’s a miracle. Can you pray God will move in power? Where could you believe him for a miracle? 6. 'Keep your eyes on Him, even in the midst of the fire’. Take a moment to pause and set your heart upon God.

If you would like to further reflect on this passage and sermon, here are some questions to reflect on: Have you ever had a dream that has stuck with you? Do you think God was speaking to you? If so, what do you think he was saying? Can you think of a time when you prayed really desperate prayers? When you had no other option? What did you learn through that experience? Maybe you’ve heard a sermon, a word of prophecy or been prayed for and God really spoke to you through it. How did you respond? The rock described in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (see verses 34-35, 45) represents God’s kingdom ‘that endures for ever’ (v44). Where would you love to see God’s kingdom advance? Think of a friend or family member who really needs to know a real relationship with God, rather than artificial religion. Could you commit to pray for them?

Further Questions for Reflection: What pressures do you or have you experienced to conform to the world around? What might help you to resist those pressures? Have you ever felt like God has given up on you? Dan mentions sports stars like Saka, Guehi, Eze and Eric Liddell. Are there other people you can think of that inspire you to remain faithful to God while in the world? ‘Daniel resolved not to defile himself’ (verse 8). Are there potentially costly decisions for God he is calling you to make? Is there a step of faith God is leading you to make? Something that seems risky or even looks foolish? ‘To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning’ (verse 17). Is there an area of your life where you need wisdom, knowledge and understanding? Could you ask God for help? Can you learn how to receive from him?

Here are the scriptures and questions for further personal thought: Matthew 5:10-16 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Salt and Light 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. 1 Peter 4:12–14: “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice because you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” Acts 5:40-42, 40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah. QUESTIONS Do we need to prepare for Persecution? If so, how could we do this? Which Bible verse(s) could be an anchor to hold us to Jesus in time of Persecution? Do you have a specific verse that helps you in case of hardship/difficulties? Have you every suffered rejection becaues of your Faith in Christ? Can you share about this? What does it mean to be a "Fragrance of Christ", can you give examples how this could look in day to day living? (2 Cor 2:14-16)

Further questions and thoughts that you might find helpful are: Can you think of a ‘neighbour’ of yours whom you can encourage and build up? ‘Christ became a servant’ - what do you think about the idea that we worship a King who is also a servant? ‘Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you’. Do you really believe that by God’s grace you are accepted by him? Can you think of Christian(s) whom you find it difficult to accept? Does it help to remember that Christ has accepted them? Choose one of the ‘impartations’ - from either verses 5-6 or verse 13 of the passage above. Speak it over yourself slowly, repeating it several times. Let it sink in. What is God saying to you through this?
