Socialization is one of the most misunderstood concepts in dog training. A well-socialized dog is not necessarily a dog that wants to play with every dog or greet every person they see. In this episode, we redefine socialization as structured exposure to the real world, including people, dogs, environments, sounds, surfaces, handling, vehicles, and unfamiliar situations. We explain why constant greetings can actually create expectations that contribute to pulling, fixation, frustration, and eventually reactivity. The goal is not to teach your dog that everything in the environment is available to them. The goal is to build a confident dog that can experience the world without becoming overwhelmed by it.
