Paul goes to Jerusalem to try to settle an intramural debate within the early church: do converts need to be circumcised in order to be full members of the Christian community? For the Jerusalem leaders, this is a simple question of faithfulness, and the answer is an obvious Yes. But for Paul, the gospel itself is at stake, and the answer is a resounding No. Debating the nature and extent of God's grace has long been a favorite pastime of the Christian church, and it almost always leads to completely missing the point of the good news of God revealed in Jesus Christ.
