When Jesus performs a miracle in the gospels, it is usually about much more than just the miracle itself. So when a man with a withered hand comes to Jesus for healing on the Sabbath, it very quickly turns into a question about what makes for faithful religious observance. As simple as the answer may seem as we look at this story, it is surprisingly difficult for us to set aside our rules when they stand in the way of doing good.
