Why Did You Leave?
Episode 1 A grown son finally speaks to his father. What comes out is not the tidy version the rest of the family prefers. It is the version that has been sitting in the dark for years: the day everything fractured, the living room, the blue couch with the strange flowers, the moment the announcement was made and the room changed temperature. He was seventeen. His brother was too young to understand. His sister was lost in her own grief. Their mother did not get out of bed for four days. She cried in her sleep. He was the one who put a towel under her head so the pillow would not be ruined. He was the one who brought water she never seemed to drink. He was the one who stood over the three of them on the bathroom floor and lied that everything would be all right. He has never stopped being angry about it. Not really. The anger changed shape over the years, but it never left. He watched his father become someone who could not sit still inside a real conversation, someone who answered every serious look with a story, an anecdote, a sudden detour into hunting gear or an old joke. He watched the family perfect the art of pretending the rupture had been smoothed over. He watched people celebrate a version of the man that left out the damage. This is the conversation that never happened while the man was still able to interrupt it. One voice. No audience. No softening.
