When we read about Jesus washing the feet of His disciples, it's easy to view this through a modern, sterile lens and to minimize the humility this act of service required. This was not a pleasant job, however, as the sandaled feet of travelers at the time would have been likely covered with all sorts of dirt, grime, animal feces...you name it! And when we step back and remember that this is not "just" a man washing the dirty feet of his friends...this is the living God, serving his enemies. Those that were soon to betray him, and those that had lived lives contrary to His law...and even us. In doing so, Jesus models the type of service He expects from His followers.
