Did the apostles in Acts 15 create a new law that later church leaders may freely imitate? Calvin answers that the decree concerning meat offered to idols, things strangled, and blood was no addition to the word of God, but a pastoral application of the eternal law of charity. The Gentiles were to retain their liberty; they were only warned not to use that liberty to the injury of weaker brethren. Human laws that bind the conscience in worship do far more than impose temporary inconvenience—they rob Christ of the sole kingship He claims over His own worship. God repeatedly condemns service offered according to the commandments of men. Voluntary worship devised by human wisdom, however humble it may appear, is in truth a refusal to let God alone be wise.
