In this special two-part, I examine the tragic and deeply unsettling case of Sophie Toscan du Plantier— a French woman who was brutally murdered outside her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland, just before Christmas in 1996.
In Part One, I’ll walk you through Sophie’s life, the days leading up to her death, and the strange, isolated setting where this horrific crime took place. We’ll look at the early investigation, the rumors that began to swirl, and the man who quickly emerged as the prime suspect: Ian Bailey.
Sophie’s story touches on issues of power, control, violence, and the way women are often failed by justice systems—no matter where they are in the world.
