The 1890s closed one long American story and opened another. The frontier was declared closed. The last major armed resistance of the Plains tribes ended at Wounded Knee. A severe depression tested the nation’s confidence. Farmers and workers organized in protest. And by the decade’s end the United States had fought a short war with Spain and emerged with overseas territories stretching from the Caribbean to the Pacific.
