The Shops and Torlaks represent an indigenous community of the central Balkans, settled along the Stara Planina mountain range and surrounding valleys, whose cultural continuity was split by modern state borders. Although the terms are often used synonymously, "Shop" originally refers to an anthropogeographic lifestyle adapted to high-mountain livestock farming, whereas "Torlak" denotes speakers of the Prizren-Timok dialect area. Their identity is the product of centuries of ethnogenesis, blending ancient Balkan substrates, Slavs, Vlachs, and nomadic tribes.
