Todayʻs discussion I'm sharing a quick lesson on another oli called, E Ala e. Itʻs an oli that is normally done in the morning during sunrise as we face the East and ask the sun to rise and reach the heavens over the mountains into the sky. We chant to the sun which is that great bright light in the sky that truly nourishes our foods and brings us warmth and good seasons. It guides us as we navigate ourselves from one area to the next.

In this Manaʻo Monday lesson, I share the legend called, "Nanahoa me Kaluau" which takes place in the Ahupuaʻa of Hakipuʻu on the windward side of the island of Oahu. This chant is a love story between a keiki kapu (sacred child) and a beautiful wahine from Kahiki. Tune in and hear the legend, the history, and the chant shared during this episode. The simplest way to explain this is that: An oli kahea is a chant performed by those that are calling out for permission to come into a space or an area they want to enter. An ʻoli komo is a chant responding to that request which grants them permission to enter.
