The first Black woman in America to attain national fame for protesting, the formerly enslaved and self-named Sojourner Truth advocated for the abolition of slavery, women’s voting rights, prison reform and the end of capital punishment across the entire United States. New York governor Kathy Hochul just announced a new state park in Ulster County will be named Sojourner Truth State Park and open later this year.
