First Chronicles 20–21 places victory and failure side by side.

Chapter 20 records continued military victories over Israel’s enemies. David’s army defeated the Ammonites, captured cities, and overcame powerful Philistine warriors.

But chapter 21 shows that victory can create a new danger: pride.

David ordered a census of Israel’s fighting men. The act itself was not automatically sinful, but David’s motive revealed misplaced confidence. Instead of resting in God’s strength, he began counting human strength.

His decision brought devastating consequences.

Yet even in judgment, we see the mercy of God. David confessed his sin, accepted responsibility, built an altar, offered sacrifices, and experienced God’s mercy.
