Before the availability of insulin therapy, diabetes was a contraindication to pregnancy. It was recommended that women with type 1 diabetes (T1D) not get pregnant.

Today, with intensive insulin therapy, many tools exist to care for people with T1D. Nevertheless, pregnant women with T1D are still considered to have high-risk pregnancies, and susceptible to complications such as fetal overgrowth, or having a large baby.
