In 2003, 15-year-old Sakia Gunn, was stabbed to death by a stranger after telling him she was gay and rejecting his sexual advances. The hate crime sparked outrage among the LGBTQIA+ community in Newark, NJ where Sakia was killed. Awareness of her murder also helped to eventually create resources and support for queer people in their city.
