For our first episode of the new year, we covered Netflix’s overnight success, Queen’s Gambit! We start the episode by talking about Gaia’s next farm adventure and Neeta pulls a tarot card for 2021! We get into discussion of the show by talking about how it became successful so fast, how starved we were for good media, and how good art is often not made individually. Neeta talks about how painfully white the show is and has a lot of feelings about Jolene. Gaia reflects on the barriers to entry in the chess world and the constructs of etiquette in so many other fields. We talk about how nice the subtle queer representation is in this show, nine rewrites not even being that many by playwriting standards, and how this show did Jolene so dirty this week on ‘Bitch, Why?’.
