Beowulf and his companions enter Heorot. Hrothgar welcomes the Geatish warrior who has come to end the twelve winters of terror. Then Unferth rises with a sharp taunt about an old swimming contest, and Beowulf answers with the full truth of that night in the sea and a challenge of his own.
