How do you build a place where technologists, artists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and curious newcomers can each find something useful, and make the environment richer for the next person? In this episode of 71 North Our Way, we revisit Spring 2025 and explore how approachable entry points, shared learning, community problem solving, research, and student-led experimentation helped 71 North grow into an increasingly connected innovation ecosystem. From VR orientation and Pizza Hacks to Mindful Moments, pitch competitions, and Project Ascension, the semester reveals what happens when a studio is designed less like an exclusive laboratory and more like a forest: diverse, open, interconnected, and strengthened by everyone who enters. An innovation ecosystem does not grow from one brilliant idea. It grows by creating the conditions for many people and possibilities to take root.
What makes someone valuable to a team: individual brilliance or the ability to help other people move the work forward? In this episode of 71 North Our Way, we explore why collaboration is not simply a personality trait, a positive attitude, or something that happens automatically when talented people share a room. Drawing from The 71 North Way and the studio’s contributor guides, we examine the practical behaviors that create collective momentum: making work visible, communicating before a problem grows, asking for help with useful context, sharing unfinished work, and leaving clearer systems for the people who come next. Along the way, we look at why small contributions matter, how retrospectives turn mistakes into learning, and why stewardship may be the defining quality of someone others want to build with. Sometimes innovation begins by putting the right people, the right problem, and a few tacos in the same room.
