In the late summer of 1921, roughly ten thousand coal miners marched across the mountains of southern West Virginia to confront company forces in the largest armed labor uprising in U.S. history. Known as the Battle of Blair Mountain, the five-day conflict pitted the self-styled “Redneck Army”—wearing red bandanas—against private guards and, eventually, federal troops, marking the first time airplanes dropped bombs on American soil.
