The Neoclassical
Neoclassicism is the label we use for the period of art history after the Baroque. Spanning the 18th century enlightenment era and into the beginning of the 19th c. Paradigms or broad thought trends always develop in relation to the period before them, and often shift to embrace an opposing aesthetic. In this case, the flowery ornamentation and ostentatiousness of the baroque and the rococo eras, gave way to the embrace of the clean lines and pared back style of classical Greek and Roman antiquity. The Baroque
Continuing on with our art history series, this episode we’ll focus upon the aesthetic of The Baroque, with reference to European classical music. The term ‘Baroque’, coined by 19th century critics, describes the period in western European classical music between 1600 to around 1750. The name derives from the Portuguese barroco, or “oddly shaped pearl.” Join our host, Dani Van De Broucke, as she explores the lives and works of Domenico Scarlatti, Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach.
