We\u2019ve all had it happen. You\u2019re recording a podcast episode and the neighbor\u2019s car alarm goes off, or the ice machine kicks on just as you\u2019re getting to the good stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, we don\u2019t even realize it\u2019s happening because we\u2019re so into what we\u2019re recording. Then, we go to edit the file and find all that annoying noise in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fear not, my fellow podcaster! If you\u2019re using Audacity, you may be able to eliminate that pesky background noise with a few simple clicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s break it down in just a few simple steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1<\/strong>: Import your audio into Audacity, or into your podcast episode template.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2<\/strong>: Select the audio track you want to reduce background noise from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udca1 Pro Tip<\/b>: Make sure the section of the audio you choose for noise reduction is one where you are not talking. Otherwise, you could eliminate some of the audio you don’t want removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3<\/strong>: Choose noise reduction under the \u201cEffect\u201d tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4<\/strong>: Click \u201cget noise profile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udca1 Pro Tip<\/strong>: We recommend leaving the default settings for Noise reduction (db), Sensitivity, and Frequency smoothing (bands) when you\u2019re first getting started in audio editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can adjust and play with these settings as you learn more. For example, for Noise reduction (db), the further left you slide the toggle arrow, the more noise will be reduced. Contrastively, the further right you slide, the louder or more pronounced the background noise will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you go too low, you’ll remove vocals that you probably don’t want to be removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 5<\/b>: Select the entire audio track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 6<\/strong>: Go back to the Effect tab, and click \u201cnoise reduction\u201d again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 7<\/strong>: Now you can either preview the changes, or just click \u201cOK\u201d to apply the noise reduction to the entire audio file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From here, you can save your file and then continue any edits you would like to complete before exporting your audio to load to your podcast host.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
