Now, we know what you\u2019re thinking. That\u2019s not helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the simple truth is, that you can spend a lot of money to get started, but <b>you don\u2019t have to<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, if you already have a computer and you\u2019re operating on a shoestring budget, you can record, edit, and launch a podcast <b>for less than $200<\/b>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, if you want to use higher-end equipment, starting a podcast can cost a few thousand dollars. While it may improve your sound quality,&nbsp;<b>it\u2019s not necessary<\/b> to develop your first episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s all that you really need to start a podcast:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A computer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A microphone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Podcast editing software<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headphones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artwork and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Podcast hosting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these items on the \u201cintro to podcasting\u201d shopping list can be acquired for less than you may realize.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s break these costs down to give you a better idea of exactly how much you\u2019ll realistically need to spend to start your podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hands-keyboard-laptop-1174775-resized-768x512.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-computer\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-computer\"><\/span>A Computer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most basic instrument in your podcast equipment toolbelt is a computer, which of course ranges from a few hundred dollars to thousands. Then again, if you already have a computer, you won\u2019t have to worry about this expense at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For true bootstrappers, there is always the option of purchasing a second-hand computer to save even more money. If you don\u2019t have a computer, can you borrow one? In a pinch, you could ask a friend or family member to use theirs to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could even go to your local library. Many public libraries have computers available for the community to use. Some public libraries even have podcasting studios you can rent for free with your library card! For example, we found free podcast studio rentals in libraries in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madisonlibrary.org\/services\/creative-studio\/recording-studio\">Kentucky<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amesfreelibrary.org\/ames-free-library-podcasting-studio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massachusetts<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcplc.org\/services\/hive\/recordingstudio\">Florida<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/jason-rosewell-60014-unsplash-resized-768x512.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-microphone\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-microphone\"><\/span>A Microphone<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your computer likely has a built-in microphone, so technically, you could get started without purchasing an actual microphone. However, <b>we don\u2019t recommend this tactic<\/b>, as the built-in microphones don\u2019t produce quality sound. Instead, purchase a quality microphone for your podcast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Samsung Q2U is only $59.99, and is a great starter microphone. You can also get <a href=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/what-is-the-best-mic-for-podcasting\/\">higher-end microphones<\/a> with more features that cost $400 or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option is to look at gently used and refurbished microphones for sale. For example, did you know that <a href=\"https:\/\/optimoroute.com\/returns-management-process\/\">when items get returned<\/a> to Amazon they can not be sold as new again? Even if nothing is wrong with the product, they can\u2019t package and re-sell it as a new item. Fortunately, you can find high-quality software that also happens to be free. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/mac\/garageband\/\">GarageBand<\/a> (already installed on Mac computers) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/audacity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Audacity<\/a>&nbsp;are two good options for free software. To find additional free editing options, you can search \u201copen source podcasting editing software\u201d in your preferred search engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on <a href=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/best-podcast-editing-software\/\">your podcast editing needs<\/a>, there are several paid software options as well. Some cost as low as $9 a month, while others cost $500 for a one-time purchase. If you\u2019re just starting out though, you can get by with free audio editing software.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When deciding what software to purchase, its always a good idea to read reviews and watch tutorials on how to use the product ahead of time. This will catch the eye of listeners, while establishing your brand. If you already know how to design, you can save money by making your own thumbnail. Or you can see what you can do a free site like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/\">Canva<\/a>. You can also hire a designer through a site like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/\">Upwork<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiverr.com\/\">Fiverr<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose this option, however, make sure to read the reviews thoroughly.
