If you&#8217;re here, you&#8217;re likely wanting to start a podcast, but don\u2019t know how to put this idea in motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, together, we are going to create your own roadmap for launching a new podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll get my best tips for planning, creating, distributing, and promoting a podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m Veronica, and I&#8217;m an online marketing and podcast coach. Podcasting is so exciting that you just want to grab that microphone and record ideas you\u2019ve had in your brain for years, and shout it out to the world! I get it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But slow down, Speedy Gonzalez!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because the key to having a podcast that performs well is to spend some time in the planning stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you develop your podcast idea, choose your audience, and design your podcast on paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we\u2019re going to do just that in step one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Pick an audience, name, and topic for your podcast\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pick-a-topic-for-your-podcast-1024x576.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-one-pick-an-audience-name-and-topic\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"step-one-pick-an-audience-name-and-topic\"><\/span>Step One: Pick an Audience, Name, and Topic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, grab that pen and paper and start imagining your future audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some example questions to help you define your audience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who am I making this show for?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I making this show for Gen-Xers, Millennials, or GenZs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I making my show for women over forty going through infertility?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I making this podcast for parents with teenagers?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I making this podcast for first-time home buyers?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does this group of people struggle with?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are their greatest desires?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"how to define your podcast audience\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/defining-your-podcast-audience-1024x576.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I understand that being this specific may make you feel unsettled because you want to make your show for everybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>But listen, when you\u2019re speaking to everyone, you end up speaking to no one.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udca1Pro Tip<\/strong>: The more specific you are in your message about who you\u2019re making your show for, the faster you will attract listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your podcast will feel like it was made specifically for them, their needs, and their particular life circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s the secret combination for an irresistible podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-now-let-s-talk-about-your-podcast-name-or-title\">Now let\u2019s talk about your podcast name or title.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing a name for your podcast is going to require some thinking and researching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Here\u2019s a quick checklist so you don&#8217;t make any mistakes:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"how to choose a name for your podcast\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-choose-a-name-for-your-podcast-1024x576.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>First, make sure your show name is easy to spell and easy to say<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid jargon or inside jokes only you would understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you are a celebrity, avoid using your own name in your title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/tips-for-choosing-the-right-name-for-your-podcast-1024x576.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if I name my podcast \u201cConversations with Veronica,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVeronica Talks,\u201d&nbsp;or \u201cVeronica\u2019s Podcast.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVeronica\u2019s Podcast\u201d will not get the attention of podcast listeners browsing for new shows because <b>they don\u2019t know who I AM<\/b>, and have no clue about what my podcast is about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/choose-something-descriptive-for-the-name-of-your-podcast-1024x576.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Descriptive names like \u201cHow to Start a Business,\u201d \u201cOnline Marketing Simplified,\u201d \u201cHow to Parent Teenagers,&#8221; or\u201c Dating in the Online Era&#8221; can help you catch the attention of new listeners interested in those topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the last two items to scratch off:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do a check to make sure your name is not already being used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bonus points if your name hints at what your show will be about<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, don\u2019t put that pen down yet, you have more details to brainstorm, your podcast topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s quickly create a list of topics that you can use to help develop your show and a handful of episode ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have no idea, turn to social media and run a search using your main topic to see what videos and posts are being made with that topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will give ideas about what to talk about and you\u2019ll also be able to see what resonates with your audience the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>OK, great work! Let\u2019s not slow down and reveal STEP NUMBER TWO.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"how to create promotional assets for your podcast\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-create-promotional-assets-for-your-podcast-1024x576.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-two-build-your-podcast-brand-and-create-promotional-assets\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"step-two-build-your-podcast-brand-and-create-promotional-assets\"><\/span>Step Two: Build your Podcast Brand and Create Promotional Assets<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your podcast is a digital product your audience will have access to and consume, as such, it should have proper packaging, a marketing strategy, and promotional materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having this in place before releasing episodes will allow you to <a href=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/how-to-promote-your-podcast-on-social-media-and-attract-new-listeners\/\">start promoting your podcast on social media<\/a>, other podcasts, online communities, newsletters, and any other creative place you can think of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t want to wait until the day you launch your podcast to start promoting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>NO. You start creating a buzz, being loud, and making noise weeks before your grand debut.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"the types of promotional assets you&#039;ll need to launch a podcast\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-04-11.58.12-AM-1024x582.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So this is what you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/how-to-add-cover-art-to-your-podcast-episode\/\">Podcast cover art<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elevator pitch, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promotional videos and graphics for social media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite tool to create all this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/pro\/\">Canva pro<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s like we were all confused, and Canva pro descended from the heavens to help those with no graphic design skills or taste like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canva pro, you can easily design your podcast cover art and all your promotional material for social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"tools to use for creating podcast cover art\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-04-12.05.41-PM-1024x582.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need extra help with your cover art, you can go to places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiverr.com\/gigs\/podcast-cover-art\">Fiverr<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/services\/podcast-cover-art\">Upwork <\/a>to find a graphic designer to help you with this task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also need a little bit of writing to give people context about your podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-create-an-elevator-pitch-for-your-podcast-1024x576.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is called a podcast elevator pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A podcast elevator pitch is another important element of your podcast brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a short paragraph describing what your podcast is about, who it\u2019s for, and who the host is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This piece of writing will go on your podcast hosting site ( which I\u2019ll cover in a minute), your social media captions, your website, and in email communication when it\u2019s time to pitch your podcast to be featured, to schedule guests, and to get sponsorships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size );\">OK, you&#8217;re doing great! Let\u2019s move on to step three.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"how to write a podcast trailer and four episodes\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-04-12.21.57-PM-1024x575.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-three-write-podcast-trailer-and-four-episodes\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"step-three-write-podcast-trailer-and-four-episodes\"><\/span>Step Three: Write Podcast Trailer and Four Episodes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing podcast trailers in my jam, ya\u2019ll!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing scripts and outlines for your trailer and episodes is a different kind of writing \u2026 I\u2019ll give you some tips on how to write in a minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But first, let\u2019s talk about why podcast trailers are important and what you should include in your trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like a movie trailer, a podcast trailer gives the listener a taste of your show, creates anticipation, sparks interest, and gets people to talk about the upcoming release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It baffles me when I see people launching their podcasts without using a trailer as part of their promotion strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If mega film production companies, well-known worldwide, like Disney and Universal, use trailers for their upcoming releases, why wouldn\u2019t you do it for your brand new show?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Go all in with your project. You\u2019re a star, and this is your moment to shine.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what should you include in your trailer? Good question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"what to include in your podcast trailer\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-04-12.25.49-PM-1024x575.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In your trailer, you will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why you created the podcast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who the podcast is for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The podcast&#8217;s format<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who is the host of the podcast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How often episodes will be released, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your launch date<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and I almost forgot, having a trailer is important because you can use it to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9gmIvloJiA0\">submit your podcast to the podcast directories<\/a> before your launch date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use your podcast trailer to promote your podcast and create anticipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tip for when you\u2019re creating your trailer is to write it out word for word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Remember, your trailer is supposed to be short and to the point.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The less you ramble, the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while you\u2019re in writing mode, you can create outlines or scripts for your first four episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always a good idea to launch with a couple of episodes and have a couple more in your queue, so you\u2019re ahead of your production schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alright, we\u2019ve passed the halfway mark and you&#8217;re doing awesome!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Let\u2019s move on to step four.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"how to write a podcast trailer and four episodes\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-04-12.21.57-PM-1024x575.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-four-record-podcast-trailer-and-episodes\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"step-four-record-podcast-trailer-and-episodes\"><\/span>Step Four: Record Podcast Trailer and Episodes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For this step, you need two things, equipment to record your podcast and recording software on your computer so you can record your voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s talk about equipment first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many options for podcast equipment, but I can assure you, you can find the right equipment for your budget and preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re new, I\u2019d recommend starting with a simple setup using a USB microphone so you can plug it directly into your computer and start recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"microphone recommendations for podcasters\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/microphone-recommendations-for-podcasters-1024x578.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/samson-q2u-podcasting-review\/\">Smason Q2u<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundguys.com\/shure-sm7b-review-28438\/\">Shure SM7V<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These two are great options! You\u2019ll also need a pair of studio headphones to hear the details and what your voice sounds like as it\u2019s being recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to recording and editing your podcast, this is where many people become overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, you just have to choose an Audio editing app or computer program, and start practicing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"the best podcast editing apps reaper hindenburg and descript\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/rss.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-best-podcast-editing-apps-reaper-hindenburg-and-descript-1024x579.png\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My recommendations for the best audio recording apps are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/reaper.fm\/\">Reaper.fm<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hindenburg.com\/\">Hindenburg, and<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.descript.com\/\">Descript<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since this is the first time you\u2019ll be recording a podcast, it\u2019s a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to relax and go through the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podcasting is like anything else in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more you record, the easier it gets, and the more your performance will improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Ready? Great! class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After you\u2019re done recording, it\u2019s time to edit your raw recordings to add to the listeners&#8217; experience and to make the episode broadcast ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the editing stage, you can remove filler words to make you sound more articulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can remove unnecessary banter and irrelevant
